Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane has appointed a multidisciplinary team of detectives and crime intelligence officers to investigate the murder of March and March Gauteng leader Andile Mvuyiselwa Somgaxa.

What SAPS says

Dimpane announced the formation of the team and said the appointment was made in consultation with Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni. She described the move as underscoring “the seriousness with which SAPS is treating this matter” and said the service was committed to identifying and arresting those responsible.

“The appointment of a multidisciplinary team underscores the seriousness with which SAPS is treating this matter. We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding this murder and to ensure accountability,”

Incident details

According to the report, Somgaxa was shot in the driveway of his Greenfield home in Johannesburg on July 3. He later died in hospital on July 13.

Reaction and next steps

An earlier report cited in the source said the March and March movement expected police to conduct a thorough investigation into Somgaxa’s killing and that the organisation vowed to continue its demonstrations despite his death.

The SAPS statement and the appointment of the specialised team signal an increased focus on the case as investigators work to establish the circumstances of the shooting and hold those responsible to account.
