SASSA sacks four Nebo office officials over R33m social grants fraud

According to IOL, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has dismissed four officials from its Nebo Local Office in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune District after an internal probe linked them to an estimated R33 million social grants fraud scheme.

Investigation and disciplinary action

According to IOL, SASSA opened an internal investigation that found the officials had allegedly manipulated the social grants system while working with external syndicates. Disciplinary proceedings were instituted against the employees and resulted in their dismissal. The officials appealed the sanction, but the Appeals Committee upheld the decision, according to IOL.

Agency response and safeguards

According to IOL, SASSA described the outcome as reflecting the seriousness of the misconduct and reiterated a zero-tolerance stance towards fraud and corruption within its ranks. The agency said it is strengthening measures to prevent similar incidents, including enhanced monitoring systems, tighter internal controls and continued ethics training for employees, according to IOL.

Wider concerns

According to IOL, SASSA warned that the case highlights the ongoing threat posed by criminal syndicates seeking to exploit the social assistance system and said safeguarding grant payments remains a priority.

“Fraudulent activities undermine the trust placed in SASSA and deprive vulnerable communities of much-needed support. We will continue to act decisively against any employee found guilty of misconduct,”

Mmapula Pheeha, Regional Executive Manager, quoted by IOL.

What this means for beneficiaries

According to IOL, SASSA assured beneficiaries and the public that efforts to protect the integrity of the social grants system remain a priority, with a focus on ensuring that funds reach the rightful recipients.
