10-year-old girl killed, two injured after gunmen open fire in Kariega shack
A 10-year-old girl died and two adults were wounded after armed men kicked open the door of a shack in Kariega and opened fire on Saturday evening, police said.
What happened
Police said the victims were inside a shack on Hillwacht Road, Kabah, at about 7pm when “two to three unknown armed suspects kicked open the door and opened fire.”
Casualties and injuries
The girl sustained a fatal gunshot wound to her chest and was declared dead at the scene. A 20-year-old man was shot in both hips, and a 21-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to her left calf. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.
Suspects and investigation
According to police, the suspects “fled the scene but allegedly returned shortly afterwards and fired additional shots into the shack before fleeing on foot.” Detectives are investigating a case of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Police said: “The motive for the attack is unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation.” No arrests had been made.

Police appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact SAPS Kamesh on 071-475-2294, Crime Stop on 08600-10111, or to submit information anonymously via the MySAPS app.
