42-year-old arrested in Limpopo after alleged rape of six-year-old

A 42-year-old man has been arrested in Limpopo on charges of raping a six-year-old girl, according to IOL. Police say the alleged assault followed an incident in which the man lured two children to his home under the pretence of collecting a jacket.

How police say the incident unfolded

According to IOL, the alleged rape occurred at about 8.30pm on July 18. The children had been at a family gathering near their home when a neighbour, known to the family, asked them to accompany him to his residence to collect a jacket. When the other child returned alone, family members checked and found the six-year-old partially undressed at the suspect’s home, IOL reports.

Family and police response

Per IOL, the child reported the incident to her family, who immediately contacted the police and a case of rape was opened. The victim was taken to a local hospital for medical examination, and members of the Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit assisted with the investigation.

Arrest and court timetable

IOL reports that the investigation led to the suspect’s arrest on July 19 in the Ritavi policing area. The suspect is expected to appear before the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. IOL quotes Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba saying that “Police investigations are continuing.”

Police comment and community reaction

According to IOL, Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers strongly condemned the incident and commended community members for their vigilance and swift reporting. Scheepers is quoted as saying,

“I call upon the parents or guardians at all times, to ensure that they do not lose sight of the young ones,”
