Post Office rolls out car licence renewals after Gauteng pilot

The South African Post Office is expanding its car licence renewal service nationwide after a successful pilot at 40 Gauteng branches that began in May 2026, the organisation said.

What changed at post office counters

Participating post office branches have been fitted with new card machines and updated till software that connect more securely to other government systems. The upgraded terminals accept cash, card payments (tap or insert with PIN) and digital-wallet payments from smartphones.

Services available on the upgraded systems

The same upgraded machines can be used to pay for car licence renewals, traffic fines, municipal bills and post office services, according to the Post Office release.

Pilot and national rollout

The test run at 40 Gauteng branches began in May 2026 and “worked well”, the Post Office said, prompting a national roll-out. The organisation noted that smaller branches that have not yet been upgraded will receive the new equipment soon.

Why the upgrades matter

The Post Office said the new software should be more reliable and better protected against hacking than its older machines, which were often outdated and prone to breakdowns.

Financial context

The Post Office has about 650 branches across South Africa. It recently came out of Business Rescue after cutting jobs, closing branches and asking creditors to accept less than they were owed. For the financial year ending March 2026 the organisation reported revenue of R1.54 billion, and a reduced net loss of R71 million, down from a loss of R514 million the year before.

Next steps

The Post Office is rolling the licence renewal capability out nationally; branches that have not yet received the upgrade will be brought online soon, the release said.
