Gauteng traffic police step up scholar transport checks as term three begins

Gauteng Traffic Police have announced a province-wide intensification of learner transport enforcement as schools reopened for the third term on 21 July 2026. Authorities said the return of pupils was expected to increase traffic volumes and that operators must ensure vehicles and drivers comply with road laws.

What police will check

The traffic authority said it would step up operations across the province with checks centred on vehicle roadworthiness, driver fitness and compliance with operating licence conditions. The GTP said enforcement would also focus on the validity of Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs), overloading, speeding, and reckless and negligent driving.

Reminder of operator responsibilities

The GTP stressed the responsibilities of learner transport operators.

“Learner transport operators are reminded that transporting children carries a significant responsibility,”

the authority said, adding that vehicles must be properly maintained and kept within passenger limits before any trip.

Advice to parents and motorists

Parents and guardians were urged to choose only registered and compliant learner transport services and to refuse any vehicle that appears unsafe.

“Parents and guardians also have an important role to play in safeguarding learners,”

the GTP said.

All motorists were advised to be patient and careful, especially near schools and pedestrian crossings, as part of the provincial effort to reduce road crashes and keep learners safe.
