Six arrested after seven transformers worth R1.5m recovered in Tembisa

According to IOL, seven electricity transformers valued at approximately R1.5 million were recovered in Tembisa after a coordinated law enforcement operation that led to the arrest of six suspects.

Joint operation recovers critical equipment

The recovery followed a joint operation involving the Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, the Gauteng Infrastructure Unit and TDP Security Services, according to IOL.

Suspects in custody and charges

Per IOL, the six suspects are being processed at Ivory Park Police Station. They face several charges, including contraventions of the Immigration Act, aiding and abetting illegal foreigners by providing accommodation, and the unlawful damaging, removal and destruction of electricity transmission, distribution and reticulation infrastructure. IOL also reports they face charges relating to the unlawful possession of electricity distribution equipment and infrastructure.

Authorities highlight importance of protecting infrastructure

The recovery and arrests come as authorities step up actions to counter theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure, which can disrupt supplies and impose costs on communities and the state. The Gauteng Department of Community Safety welcomed the operation, saying it was an important step in protecting critical infrastructure and preventing further losses to communities and the electricity supply network, IOL reported.

Ongoing enforcement effort

IOL says the department commended the law enforcement officers involved for their continued efforts to disrupt criminal activity targeting essential infrastructure and stated that the operation forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to safeguard public infrastructure and hold those involved in infrastructure-related crimes accountable.
