Back to the City celebrates 20 years on Saturday 10 October at Mary FitzGerald Square in Newtown. The 2026 theme is ‘Against All Odds’, and doors open from 12:00.
The line-up leans big. US rapper Ab-Soul joins Detroit group Slum Village on the international bill, with Cassper Nyovest representing South Africa. Beyond the stage, expect MCs, dancers, graffiti, skating, basketball and a market, so wander between sets.
Tickets come in tiers. General admission costs R200 to R1 000, and R1 500 via Webtickets. Buy early, because a 20th anniversary tends to draw crowds, and check the official channels for the final programme and venue rules.

Plan your day like this. Arrive early to settle in, carry water and sunscreen, and agree a meeting point with friends in case phone networks struggle. Wear comfortable shoes for standing and dancing and book your ride home before the headliners finish. Newtown sits in the heart of the city, so combine the festival with a stroll through the nearby cultural precinct for a full Jozi Saturday.
