Police have arrested two suspects and confiscated counterfeit goods valued at R37,760 during an operation targeting suspected illegal trading activities in Pretoria Central.

The operation saw members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), including the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit and Commercial Crime Unit, working alongside brand protection representatives to crack down on businesses suspected of selling fake products.

Three shops were visited during the operation, with officers executing two search and seizure warrants.

By the end of the operation, 472 counterfeit consumable items had been seized, while two suspects were arrested for allegedly dealing in counterfeit goods.

Pretoria Central operation targets illegal trade

The arrests form part of ongoing efforts by Gauteng police to disrupt the sale of counterfeit, contraband and other illicit goods across the province.

Pretoria Central is a busy commercial area where legitimate businesses depend on consumer trust and the protection of their brands. The sale of counterfeit products can undermine that trust, affecting businesses whose products are copied and sold illegally.

According to SAPS Gauteng, trading in counterfeit goods infringes on intellectual property rights and threatens legitimate commercial activity.

The latest operation highlights the role of coordinated enforcement in identifying suspected illegal trading and removing counterfeit products from circulation.

Police urge residents to report suspicious activity

SAPS Gauteng has reiterated its commitment to tackling the trade in counterfeit and illicit goods, warning that enforcement operations will continue as authorities work to bring those involved to justice.

Members of the public can also help by reporting suspected criminal activity to their nearest police station.

Information can be shared through the SAPS Crime Stop line on 08600 10111 or anonymously via the MySAPS app.
