Claims that March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma and her husband, Xolani Zuma, could face arrest have been dismissed by both the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The controversy emerged after Xolani Zuma announced that arrest warrants had allegedly been issued against the couple in connection with the activities of the movement, which has campaigned against undocumented immigration in South Africa.

However, neither the NPA nor police have confirmed the claims, with authorities urging activists to avoid spreading unverified information.

NPA denies issuing arrest warrants

In a statement released on Thursday, 15 October, the NPA rejected claims suggesting that warrants had been issued against Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma and her husband.

The prosecuting authority stressed that its decisions are guided by the Constitution, legislation and available evidence, adding that it does not take instructions from political parties, public office-bearers or other individuals regarding its prosecutorial responsibilities.

The NPA also cautioned against public statements that could misrepresent the criminal justice process.

While authorities generally avoid commenting on operational matters involving investigations and potential arrests, the NPA said information about charges and the reasons for prosecution would become available through the normal judicial process if a matter reaches court.

KwaZulu-Natal police also dismiss the claims

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have similarly rejected reports that arrest warrants have been issued for the two individuals.

According to SAPS, there is no record of a case registered against them.

Police said the rumours had the potential to cause unnecessary concern among residents, prompting them to publicly clarify the situation.

SAPS also urged activists to exercise responsibility when making public statements, warning that reckless or malicious claims could contribute to tensions and potentially incite violence.

The police service added that anyone who believes a warrant has been issued against them should contact the relevant authorities to verify the information.

Authorities call for responsible public communication

The claims have placed renewed attention on the importance of verifying information before sharing it, particularly when allegations involve potential criminal proceedings.

Although Xolani Zuma initially raised the possibility of arrest, he also questioned whether the information was genuine and said the couple’s team was working to establish the facts.

He indicated that they were prepared to face the authorities if the reports proved to be true.
