Suliman Carrim faces Musina court over alleged Absa vehicle theft and money laundering
North West businessman Suliman Carrim appears in Musina court on Oct 22 accused of attempted theft and money laundering over two Absa-financed vehicles intercepted at Beitbridge.
What the authorities say
In a statement, the NPA said Carrim had been added to two existing cases on 21 October 2026 by the Commission’s Recommendations Task Team (CRTT). According to the NPA’s Limpopo regional spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi, the allegation is that Carrim acted in collusion with employees to arrange the cross-border movement of the vehicles using false paperwork.
“It is alleged that Carrim, acting in collusion with his employees, attempted to steal two vehicles belonging to ABSA by taking them out of the country using fraudulent documentation,” the NPA said.
How the vehicles were intercepted
The charges stem from an incident on 22 July 2026, when police officers stationed at the Beitbridge border post in Musina intercepted two motor vehicles that were allegedly destined for Malawi. Police said the vehicles had been moved from Mahikeng in the North West and were en route to the border for onward transportation.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that two suspects were arrested and charged in connection with the interception. Preliminary investigations indicated that arrangements had allegedly been made to obtain bank authorisation documents to permit lawful cross-border movement, but those authorisations were reportedly not provided and allegedly fraudulent bank documents were used instead.
Custody and court dates
The NPA confirmed that two accused remain in custody after being arrested at the Beitbridge border post. The two suspects were previously expected to appear before the Musina Regional Court on 27 October 2026. Carrim’s expected first appearance on 22 October 2026 follows his addition to the two existing cases.
Authorities have also said that the two vehicles, which were still under finance, were handed back to the bank. The legal allegations against all accused are subject to the ongoing court process.
Court matters beyond the Absa case
Carrim’s appearance in Musina comes while he is already facing separate legal proceedings. He was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on 15 October 2026 while preparing to travel abroad and appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court over an alleged failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
That arrest followed an investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption connected to the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in the North West. During bail proceedings, the State expressed concerns that Carrim posed a flight risk; his legal team disputed that claim. The bail proceedings were postponed to 28 October 2026, with Carrim remaining in custody pending the outcome of the application.
What this means and the next steps
The matters now before court will determine whether the allegations proceed to trial. As with all accused, the allegations against Carrim and the others remain subject to the court process. Investigations into the use of alleged fraudulent documentation and the intended cross-border movement of the vehicles continue, according to statements from authorities.
General context: Cross-border movement of financed vehicles typically requires bank or financier authorisation and border clearance documentation. When such paperwork is absent or disputed, law enforcement and financial institutions may intervene to prevent export and secure vehicles that remain under finance. Criminal investigations of this kind explore the authenticity of documents, the involvement of multiple actors, and whether financial institutions were defrauded.

Why readers should watch this case
The case brings together allegations of fraudulent documentation, cross-border movement of financed assets, and concurrent legal inquiries involving the same individual. For the bank, the accused and law enforcement, the outcome will hinge on evidence about how the paperwork was procured and who authorised the vehicles’ movement. For the public, the proceedings underscore how financial controls and border enforcement interact when theft and documentation fraud are alleged.
The NPA and police statements underline that the matter remains under investigation and that criminal allegations must be tested in court. JoburgEtc will monitor court appearances and report confirmed developments as they become available through official channels.
