Soweto teacher accused of raping 9-year-old pupil hands himself over to police

A teacher accused of raping a nine-year-old girl at Busisiwe Primary School in Zola, Soweto, has handed himself over to police following community protests and growing calls for accountability.

Reportedly, the teacher is expected to appear before the Protea Magistrate’s Court after Gauteng police confirmed that he would be charged with rape. He cannot be named because the case involves a minor whose identity must be protected.

The allegations have sparked anger among residents and parents, raising serious concerns about the safety of children on school premises.

Community demands answers after alleged school assault

The alleged incident reportedly took place on 8 October, when the Grade 4 pupil was at school. According to information shared with the school governing body, the girl had indicated that she was going to the toilet when the teacher allegedly followed her.

The case drew widespread attention after an account of the incident, reportedly shared by the child with her family, was captured on video and circulated on social media.

Residents of Zola subsequently staged protests on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, demanding the teacher’s arrest. Their actions put pressure on authorities to provide answers as the family sought justice for the child.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the teacher had handed himself over at Jabulani police station and was expected to face a rape charge.

Education department moves to support pupil

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile visited the school on Wednesday morning to address the allegations. The department subsequently placed the teacher on precautionary suspension while the matter proceeds through the relevant processes.

Maile said support measures were being arranged for the pupil and the broader school community, including counselling and assistance from social workers.

He also stressed the importance of helping the child continue her education while dealing with the trauma associated with the allegations.

‘The pupil must be given special attention to recover academically. She will be supported privately in school.’

The department’s response highlights the challenges schools face when allegations of serious misconduct involve staff members entrusted with the care and education of children.

Family hopes for justice as pupil receives support

The girl’s aunt confirmed that the family had been informed that the teacher had handed himself over to police. While the arrest brought some relief, she said the child remained traumatised. ‘We are relieved that he has been arrested. We hope the wheels of justice will start grinding,’ she said.

The family is hoping the child will be able to heal as time passes, with support available to help her through the aftermath of the alleged incident. The case has also left parents seeking clarity about what happened at the school and how the alleged assault could have occurred during the school day.

School governing body calls for justice

School governing body chairperson Nomvula Hongwane said the SGB learned about the allegations on Monday night and subsequently approached the principal for answers.

Hongwane described the accused teacher as a dedicated employee who had worked at the school for four years and offered additional weekend lessons to pupils who needed academic assistance. However, she cautioned against reaching a verdict before the matter had been heard in court.

‘He loves his children. He is disciplined. However, that doesn’t mean he is guilty or innocent. The court will determine that.’

Her comments reflect the distinction between the concerns raised by the community and the legal process that must establish the facts. As the criminal case moves forward, the immediate priorities remain the protection of the child’s identity, her emotional and academic recovery, and a thorough investigation into the allegations.

The teacher’s appearance in court is expected to mark the next step in a case that has placed child safety and accountability at the centre of concern in the Soweto school community.
