Motorists across South Africa are being urged to renew their vehicle licence discs ahead of the festive season, with more than 2.2 million set to expire in November and December.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned drivers not to leave renewals until the last minute, as increased traffic volumes during the holiday period could add pressure to already busy roads and licensing services.

For Western Cape motorists preparing for December getaways, the reminder is particularly important, with 374,761 vehicle licence discs expected to expire across the province over the two-month period.

Gauteng leads vehicle licence renewals

According to the RTMC, a total of 2,248,795 vehicle licence discs will need to be renewed nationally during November and December.

Gauteng accounts for the largest share, with 851,687 discs due to expire. KwaZulu-Natal follows the Western Cape, with 327,014 renewals expected.

With many South Africans travelling to coastal destinations during the festive season, motorists are encouraged to get their paperwork in order before setting off.

An expired licence disc can mean unnecessary complications, making it worth checking the expiry date well ahead of a planned trip.

Renew your licence disc online

Motorists can renew their vehicle licence discs through the official NaTIS online platform and arrange to have them delivered to their homes or workplaces.

The RTMC says the online service has recorded eight million transactions since its launch in 2022, highlighting its growing role in helping motorists avoid in-person queues.

Drivers who also need to renew their driving licences are encouraged to make use of extended operating hours at RTMC driving licence testing centres. According to the corporation, participating centres operate seven days a week, from 07:00 to 21:00.

Motorists should confirm the services available at their chosen centre before visiting.

Check your vehicle before hitting the road

Renewing a licence disc is only one part of preparing for a safe festive season journey.

The RTMC is also urging drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and properly serviced before embarking on long-distance trips.

Tyres, brakes, headlights, indicators and windscreen wipers should all be checked, as these components play an important role in keeping drivers and passengers safe.

Drivers are also reminded to get enough rest before travelling, take regular breaks and avoid driving when tired. Heavy vehicle operators should ensure their drivers are medically fit for duty and that vehicles are safe before departure.

Motorists are further urged to obey speed limits, maintain a safe following distance, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and ensure everyone in the vehicle wears a seat belt.
