Official adjustments take effect Wednesday, 6 August. Here’s what you need to know.

South African motorists will see mixed changes at the pumps this month. While petrol prices are falling, diesel users face another sharp increase as the Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (DPMR) implements its monthly fuel price adjustments.

Petrol Prices Drop 28 Cents

Good news for petrol users: both 93 and 95 octane grades will decrease by 28 cents per litre from Wednesday, 6 August 2025.

New petrol prices:

  • Inland:

    • 93: R21.51 (down from R21.79)

    • 95: R21.59 (down from R21.87)

  • Coastal:

    • 93: R20.72

    • 95: R20.76

This marks the second consecutive monthly decrease, thanks to:

  • A slight dip in international petroleum prices

  • Marginal rand strength (averaging R17.76/USD in July)

  • Increased global oil supply from OPEC producers

Diesel Prices Jump Up to 65 Cents

The news isn’t as good for diesel users, with prices increasing significantly:

  • 0.05% diesel: +65c (new inland price R20.00)

  • 0.005% diesel: +63c (new inland price R20.04)

Coastal diesel prices will range between R19.17 and R19.28.

These hikes are driven by:

  • Unexpected refinery shutdowns in the US

  • Growing demand in Europe as winter approaches

  • Ongoing global supply constraints for middle distillates

Other Fuel Adjustments

  • Illuminating paraffin: +32c (R13.47 inland)

  • LPGAS: -69c/kg nationally (Western Cape sees -78c)

The LPGAS reduction brings welcome relief, especially in colder regions where usage increases during winter.

Why the Different Trends?

While petrol benefits from surplus global inventories, diesel continues to face structural shortages. The modest 0.4% strengthening of the rand helped cushion what could have been even larger increases.

AA spokesperson Layton Beard warned, “These diesel hikes will inevitably push up transport and food costs.” Meanwhile, taxi associations welcomed the petrol price relief, though some commuters remained sceptical about whether savings would be passed on.
