As Siya Kolisi marked his 100th Test for the Springboks at the Stade de France, football legend Jurgen Klopp joined thousands of South Africans in celebrating the moment. The former Liverpool manager shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, calling Kolisi’s story one of the most inspiring he’s ever known.

Siya, my friend, another milestone in one of the most incredible sports careers I’ve ever heard of,” Klopp said. “Calling you my friend is one of the biggest honours I can imagine. And the best is still to come.”

From Cape Town To Global Friendship

Their friendship began unexpectedly in 2019, not on the pitch but in a Cape Town restaurant. Kolisi, fresh off his Rugby World Cup win, spotted Klopp walking by and called him over. What started as a quick hello turned into a long chat and a lasting bond between two leaders who had just reached the top of their sports.

Days later, Kolisi accepted Klopp’s invitation to Anfield, attending a Champions League clash against Napoli. Since then, the pair have become close friends, often reuniting for charity events, campaigns, and birthdays which they happen to share on 16 June.

Shared Values, Different Worlds

What makes their friendship special is how it bridges two sporting cultures. Kolisi, South Africa’s first Black rugby captain, embodies resilience and unity. Klopp, a German coach beloved by fans across the world, is known for his passion and empathy.

Together, they’ve fronted Adidas campaigns that celebrate leadership and determination, showing that respect between athletes can transcend borders and codes.

Kolisi once said of Klopp: “I’m a big fan, but he treats me like a friend. He’s such a good human being, and his wife is amazing too.”

South Africans Celebrate Their Hero

Kolisi’s 100th cap is not just a personal milestone it’s a celebration of perseverance that resonates across the country. On social media, South Africans called him “a symbol of hope” and “the pride of the nation.”

For many, Klopp’s message was a reminder of just how far Kolisi’s influence reaches from the dusty fields of Zwide to one of the world’s greatest stadiums.

As one fan wrote on X: “From the township to the top of the world. Siya Kolisi’s story will be told for generations.”

And with friends like Klopp cheering him on, it’s safe to say Kolisi’s journey is far from over.
