The singer pushes back hard after new claims reignite South Africa’s most high-profile murder case

Kelly Khumalo has had enough. After nearly a decade of being tied to one of South Africa’s most painful and publicised murder cases, the award-winning singer is speaking out, not through a lawyer or a press statement, but in her own words.

“Enough is enough. It stops here, and it stops today,” she declared in a video posted Friday morning, in response to Advocate Malesela Teffo’s latest allegations about the murder of Senzo Meyiwa, her former partner and the beloved Bafana Bafana goalkeeper who was gunned down in 2014.

Khumalo’s voice was calm but defiant. “If you truly believe I am capable of what you’re accusing me of, then it’s very simple: come and get me. I am not above the law.”

A murder mystery that won’t rest

Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed inside Khumalo’s mother’s home in Vosloorus on 26 October 2014. The case has haunted the country ever since, not only because of Meyiwa’s fame but also due to the swirling cloud of confusion, legal drama, and theories surrounding what really happened that night.

Initially framed as a botched robbery, the case has since seen multiple twists and turns, including accusations of police incompetence, missing evidence, and claims of a cover-up. Even as five men stand trial for the murder, the public continues to question the full truth.

Teffo’s new claim reignites controversy

This week, former defence lawyer Advocate Malesela Teffo once again placed Khumalo in the spotlight during an appearance on Podcast and Chill. Under oath, Teffo alleged that it was Khumalo herself who accidentally shot Meyiwa that night.

“It was a fatal mistake. Kelly Khumalo shot and killed Senzo instantly at about half past eight,” Teffo said, repeating a version of events he previously hinted at during his involvement in the trial. Teffo withdrew from the case in 2022, citing harassment and bias from the bench.

His reappearance and renewed claims have reignited public anger and speculation online. While some social media users demanded answers, others criticised Teffo for fuelling the fire without providing new legal evidence.

Khumalo draws the line

Khumalo, who has remained mostly diplomatic in public over the years, made it clear in her video that she would no longer stay quiet in the face of what she called character assassination.

“I’m done being diplomatic,” she said. “I’m not going to waste money hiring lawyers to speak on my behalf.”

Her response, posted on Friday, quickly trended across social media platforms, with thousands of people weighing in. Some praised her for confronting the accusations head-on. Others remained divided, with calls for renewed investigations or for the courts to finally conclude the case.

Public exhaustion and legal limbo

The Senzo Meyiwa case has become more than just a murder trial. It is a symbol of public frustration over the pace and credibility of South Africa’s justice system. While court proceedings drag on, public opinion continues to swing, fuelled by online commentary, celebrity profiles, and explosive interviews like Teffo’s.

For Kelly Khumalo, this latest round seems to mark a personal tipping point. Whether her challenge will lead to further legal action or simply spark more debate remains to be seen. What’s clear, however, is that she is done playing it safe.
