There are milestones that feel bigger than the object itself. A first car is one of them. And this week, it was a Suzuki Jimny with a giant red bow that told a much deeper story for Siya Kolisi and his younger brother.

The Springbok captain took to Instagram on Thursday, 12 February, sharing a proud big brother moment as Liyema Kolisi received the keys to his first vehicle. In the post, Liyema stands beside his brand-new Suzuki Jimny, grinning from ear to ear. The bow says celebration. The smile says everything else.

But it was Siya’s caption that truly hit home.

“Mama jonga abantwana bakho,” he wrote. Translated from isiXhosa, it means, “Mom, look at your children.”

For those who know the Kolisi family story, that line carries weight.

Remembering where it all began

Siya has often spoken about growing up in Zwide township in Gqeberha. After their mother passed away in 2009, his younger half-siblings, Liyema and Liphelo, were placed in foster care. In 2014, Siya and his then-wife, Rachel, adopted them, bringing them into a stable home and committing fully to raising them as their own.

Since then, the rugby star has made it clear that family comes first. Whether it is sharing meals, lighthearted TikTok videos, or quiet moments behind the scenes, Liyema is a regular presence in his life.

So when Siya posted a photo that read, “God blesses us to bless others,” many followers took it as a sign that he had bought the Jimny himself. It was less about the car and more about what it symbolised. Growth. Stability. A promise kept.

Social media reacts with love

The comment section quickly turned into a celebration.

Fans congratulated Liyema on his first car and praised Siya for being a steady, present older brother. Messages wishing Liyema safe and happy kilometres poured in. Others described Siya as someone who has paved the way for his entire family.

Even Rachel John, the Dutch influencer who has been linked to Siya in recent months, dropped a playful comment calling it “the best car.” The two have not publicly confirmed their relationship, but fans have been speculating for some time. Earlier this month, a video of Siya and Liyema enjoying Nigerian jollof rice sparked further chatter, with some followers wondering who prepared the meal.

Still, in this particular moment, the spotlight stayed firmly on brotherhood.

More than just a car

In South Africa, a first car often marks independence. It is school runs, late-night drives, job interviews, and weekend trips. For many families, it is a symbol of breaking cycles.

For the Kolisis, it is also proof of how far they have come.

From foster care in Zwide to standing beside a brand new Suzuki Jimny, Liyema’s milestone reflects years of commitment and quiet sacrifice behind the scenes. And for Siya, who has always credited his late mother for shaping his values, the post felt like a message sent skyward.

A proud brother. A remembered mother. A young man holding his own set of keys.

Sometimes, that is the real victory.
