Johannesburg Water is making significant progress on a major infrastructure project aimed at easing water supply pressure in key parts of Midrand. A new two-megalitre elevated water tower and upgraded pump station are under construction in the Erand area, expected to benefit residents in Carlswald, Blue Hills, Kyalami, and Barbeque Downs.

The 30-metre-high reinforced concrete tower is part of a broader plan to expand water storage and improve delivery in high-demand regions. Once complete, the R92-million project will add crucial capacity to the existing Erand Reservoir system, ensuring improved water availability for thousands of homes and businesses.

The Erand site currently includes a 25-megalitre and a nine-megalitre reservoir, both supplying water via an existing pump station. This project will enhance the complex as part of Johannesburg Water’s long-term Master Plan and its Reservoir Storage Upgrade Programme, which targets 24-hour storage capacity across all reservoirs.

Johannesburg Water project manager Pfunzo Mudzanani explained that the current pump station draws water from the nine-megalitre reservoir and channels it into a 0.5-megalitre tower to create sufficient hydrostatic pressure for surrounding communities.

The new pump station, which will house four pumps, is designed to feed water to both the existing 0.5-megalitre tower and the new two-megalitre tower. With the construction already 60% complete, the development is on track to significantly improve potable water distribution in the northern Johannesburg corridor.
