Acsa Commits R21.7 Billion to Transform South Africa’s Airports

Acsa Launches Ambitious Airport Upgrade Plan
Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) is preparing for one of its largest infrastructure projects in years, unveiling a R21.7 billion investment over the next 12 months to modernise and expand the country’s airport network.
According to CFO Luzuko Mbotya, around R10 billion of the funding will come from long-term infrastructure loans on favourable terms, while the remainder will draw from Acsa’s reserves, which have been strengthened by rising profits.
Why Lenders Are Watching
Acsa’s improved financial performance has made it an attractive option for lenders. Profits more than doubled to R1.1 billion in the 2024/25 financial year, and cash reserves now total R5.9 billion. This strong footing gives Acsa the confidence to embark on ambitious upgrades across multiple airports.
Key Projects Underway
Among the most significant investments is a R5.7 billion cargo terminal at OR Tambo International Airport, set for completion in 2028–29. Preparatory work has already started, signalling Acsa’s commitment to modernising logistics and cargo handling.
The 2025/26 financial year alone will see R2.3 billion allocated to refurbishment and rehabilitation projects. Passengers at Cape Town International Airport will benefit from an extension to the domestic departures lounge, alongside runway improvements and upgrades to passenger terminals nationwide.
A Modern Vision for South Africa’s Airports
Acsa’s plan aims to position South African airports among the region’s most efficient and modern hubs. Social media chatter has welcomed the news, with travelers excited about smoother domestic and international travel. Analysts note that improved airport infrastructure could boost tourism, cargo efficiency, and overall economic growth.
With R21.7 billion earmarked for transformation, South African travelers and businesses are set to see tangible benefits in comfort, capacity, and operational efficiency in the years ahead.
