Amber-Lee Hughes Convicted of Murder and Rape

Johannesburg is shaken after the conviction of Amber-Lee Hughes, a former preschool teacher who drowned her four-year-old stepdaughter, Nada-Jane Challita. The verdict was delivered on Thursday at the Gauteng High Court by Judge Richard Mkhabela. Hughes also faces two counts of rape.

The Crime and Arrest

Hughes was arrested in 2023 after Nada-Jane was found dead in the bathtub of the apartment she shared with her father, Elie Chalita. The court heard that the incident followed a heated dispute over Chalita’s alleged infidelity. Hughes initially pleaded not guilty and claimed innocence throughout most of the trial.

Later, she admitted to killing the child, citing emotional distress and her struggle with borderline personality disorder. Hughes told the court she was fully aware of her actions. She also revealed multiple failed suicide attempts after the tragedy. She denied the rape allegations.

Court Findings

Judge Mkhabela noted that Hughes’ confession clarified that Nada-Jane’s death was deliberate. The admission aligned with the medical evidence presented by forensic pathologist Dr. Hestelle Van Stadan.

“The accused’s latest admissions confirm she drowned the child by sitting on top of her and that this caused the child’s death,” the judge stated.

Hughes was ultimately found guilty on one count of murder and two counts of rape.

Sentencing and Legal Proceedings

Following the verdict, Hughes’ lawyer requested additional time to prepare for sentencing. The court set the sentencing date for 27 October. The state plans to present a victim-impact report and expert testimony to guide the judge’s decision.

Public Reaction

The case has sparked strong reactions across South Africa. On social media, many expressed outrage that someone trusted with children could commit such a crime. Discussions also highlight the need for mental health support and stronger safeguards for children in family settings.

Local Context and Commentary

Child abuse and murder remain pressing concerns in South Africa. Experts note that the Hughes case underscores the importance of mental health screening and early intervention. Families and communities are calling for more robust measures to protect vulnerable children from those in caregiving roles.
