ANC Suspends Thapelo Molepo Amid Social Media Allegations of R700 Million Tender Fraud

ANC Suspends Activist Thapelo Molepo Over Social Media Tender Allegations
In a move that has sparked debate on social media and within political circles, the African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo has suspended Thapelo Molepo for three years. The disciplinary decision comes after Molepo made explosive allegations of R700 million in alleged tender fraud at the Polokwane Municipality.
Disciplinary Hearing Highlights
The Mphogodiba Branch Disciplinary Committee convened on August 15, 2025, at Sehlale Primary School to hear Molepo’s case. The hearing, conducted largely in his absence, focused on Molepo’s social media activity where he publicly accused ANC leaders, municipal officials, and party members of corruption.
Committee chair Marothi Letsoalo confirmed Molepo’s suspension, citing breaches of party policies. “He was found guilty of unethical conduct that could bring the ANC into disrepute and provoke division within the party,” Letsoalo said. Molepo’s suspension, effective August 17, bars him from participating in ANC activities, holding office, or representing the party publicly.
Molepo’s Allegations
Molepo, a former ANC member in Polokwane’s Mphogodiba Branch, has been vocal about alleged irregularities in municipal tenders worth over R700 million. He claims that 28 companiesmany linked to Mayor John Mpe and municipal manager Thuso Nemugumoni, were awarded contracts improperly.
Two days before his suspension, Molepo led a protest demanding the removal of Mpe and Nemugumoni, further intensifying tensions within the party. Now serving as convener of the activist group Concerned Citizens of Polokwane (CCP), Molepo has shared documents online that he says substantiate his claims.
Party Response
ANC provincial spokesperson Jimmy Machaka confirmed the party is aware of Molepo’s allegations but cautioned that they should be tested through law enforcement channels. “The ANC in Limpopo notes the allegations. Those making them should approach the authorities,” Machaka said, emphasizing that unverified claims can harm public trust.
Interestingly, Machaka noted that the ANC Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) had not formally been informed of Molepo’s suspension, highlighting possible gaps in internal communication.
Public Reaction and Political Implications
Social media users have been quick to weigh in, with some expressing support for Molepo’s fight against corruption, while others warn against bypassing due process. Analysts suggest this episode reflects broader tensions in Limpopo politics, where factional battles within the ANC often play out publicly.
The Molepo saga underscores the delicate balance between activism and party loyalty. While ANC members are expected to uphold party unity, whistleblowers argue that transparency and accountability must not be sidelinedeven if it means challenging powerful figures within their own ranks.
