A family shattered in Mitchells Plain

Mitchells Plain is no stranger to tough days, but last week the community was shaken by a tragedy that cut straight to the heart of one family. Angelo Elo Rasta Adams, a 34-year-old father of four, was killed while standing on the corner of Eisleben and Snapdragon Roads, waiting for transport to begin his night shift at the Docks. Moments later, an out-of-control BMW came hurtling towards him on the wrong side of the road.

Police confirmed that the driver collided with Angelo before crashing into four other vehicles carrying adults and children. Everyone who survived, including the driver, was taken to the hospital. What has not followed are the answers the Adams family desperately needs.

A mother searching for truth

For the first time since that night, Angelo’s mother, Sarah Adams, gathered the strength to speak. Her grief sits heavy in every word. She has not received a visit, an apology, or any acknowledgement from the driver or the driver’s family.

Someone who claimed to know the driver allegedly told a shopkeeper that the family had considered helping with funeral arrangements. Nothing came of it. Nothing was said to the people who lost a son and a father.

Sarah’s voice broke when she recalled the silence. She said that while her son lay dying, his girlfriend’s cellphone, his speaker box, and even his shoes were stolen. The videos circulating online have reopened the wound again and again for the family.

She is holding strong for Angelo’s four children, yet she now faces the reality that their only provider is gone. She is asking the public to help with the children’s clothing and school essentials for the new year. For her, this is about survival, dignity, and justice.

Rumours, questions, and a demand for accountability

In the absence of an arrest, speculation has filled the silence. Some locals have suggested the driver may have fallen sick behind the wheel or suffered an epileptic seizure. Sarah does not reject possibilities, but she wants clarity. Whether a medical emergency occurred or not, she believes her family deserves the truth from the person who took Angelo’s life.

Her son was heading to work, she says, to do what he always did. He supported his household, cared for his family, and stepped in whenever the community needed help. Now she wants the driver and the driver’s family to commit to supporting the children whose father will never come home again.

A life remembered and a community in mourning

Angelo’s aunt, Monica Booysen, described him as someone whose kindness seemed endless. He greeted elders with respect, even if they were strangers. If someone needed help, he stepped up. He had a way of making others feel seen, which makes his sudden absence even harder to bear.

The Adams family is now trying to plan a funeral while navigating heartbreak and unanswered questions. All they want is accountability and the chance to say a proper goodbye.

Police investigation continues

Lentegeur police have opened cases of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving. No arrest has been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that there are currently no new developments.

Anyone who wishes to help Sarah and the children can contact her directly on 078 466 0251.
