Bill Clinton faces tough questioning over Epstein connections

Former US President Bill Clinton is preparing for intense questioning before a Republican-led Congressional panel on Friday, as lawmakers probe his links to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The hearing follows the release of millions of Justice Department documents detailing Epstein’s vast network of associates, which prominently feature Clinton, though the former president has not been accused of wrongdoing.

Behind the scenes of a high-stakes deposition

The depositions are being held in Chappaqua, New York, the Clintons’ hometown, under tight security. The Secret Service has erected metal barricades around the local arts center, and dozens of journalists have gathered to cover the proceedings.

Democrats have criticised the process, claiming it is being weaponized to tarnish political opponents, particularly President Donald Trump.

Hillary Clinton, who testified Thursday, highlighted this point, insisting that she neither flew on Epstein’s plane nor visited his private Caribbean island. In her opening statement, she pressed Congress to question Trump about his own ties to Epstein, saying:

“If this committee is serious about learning the truth about Epstein’s trafficking crimes… it would ask him directly under oath about the tens of thousands of times he shows up in the Epstein files.”

Clinton’s connections under scrutiny

Bill Clinton has acknowledged multiple flights on Epstein’s private plane during the early 2000s, tied to humanitarian work for the Clinton Foundation. He has denied visiting Epstein’s island and maintains he had no involvement in criminal activities.

Previously unseen photos from the Justice Department files show Clinton in a hot tub and swimming alongside a woman identified as Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell, though no wrongdoing has been alleged. Maxwell’s attorney, David Markus, stressed that both Clinton and Trump are “innocent of any wrongdoing.”

Despite these assurances, Clinton faces heightened scrutiny compared with Hillary, due to his acknowledged social interactions with Epstein. Republican committee chair James Comer noted after Hillary’s testimony that the panel has “a lot of questions for her husband tomorrow.”

The political backdrop

The Epstein investigation has long ensnared figures from the world’s wealthy and powerful, and the 2008 conviction of Epstein for soliciting sex from minors shocked the globe. His 2019 death in a New York jail cell, ruled a suicide, left many questions unanswered.

For Clinton, the Congressional grilling is as much about perception as legal exposure. Democrats argue that Republicans are using the proceedings to divert attention toward Trump’s own links to Epstein, framing the hearings as a political theatre rather than a purely oversight exercise.

As the depositions unfold behind closed doors, public attention remains riveted on the iconic couple’s hometown, where questions of influence, accountability, and privilege intersect with the shadowy world Epstein built around himself.

From Chappaqua to the headlines, Bill Clinton’s testimony will likely dominate US political coverage this week, as the country wrestles with the fallout of Epstein’s crimes and the prominent figures who moved in his orbit.
