DA’s Credit Card Clearance of Steenhuisen Divides Party

The Democratic Alliance is facing internal upheaval after its Federal Legal Commission (FLC) cleared party leader John Steenhuisen of wrongdoing over alleged misuse of the party’s credit card. While the FLC concluded the payments had been reimbursed, party insiders warn the decision has deepened divisions and threatens the DA’s image just months ahead of its leadership conference.

“The money in the DA account comes from tithes that public representatives pay every month from their salaries. Some earn very little, yet their money was used by someone who earns millions per year. How dare he use the DA credit card for personal expenses and get away with it?” one insider told IOL, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Allegations That Sparked the Investigation

The controversy began after former DA Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Dion George accused Steenhuisen of using the party credit card to cover personal family expenses. George claimed he had removed the card after discovering the alleged misuse.

Both men are now facing party disciplinary hearings to determine whether their public spat brought the DA into disrepute. Meanwhile, the Public Protector is investigating allegations related to George’s removal as minister last year.

“It’s clear John spent the money for his own use. In any other case, a public representative would face suspension. Yet he continues functioning as normal,” another insider said.

Factions and Frustrations

Party insiders are split. Some argue Steenhuisen should be allowed to continue his leadership unimpeded. They cite party growth and diversification under his tenure.

“The fact is, the party has grown since Steenhuisen took over. Membership reflects more diversity and strength this is under his leadership,” said a source close to Steenhuisen.

Others see the FLC’s clearance as a blatant cover-up, designed to smooth the way for Steenhuisen’s second term. Critics point to disparities in performance assessments between Steenhuisen and George, questioning the fairness of decisions that led to George’s firing despite higher internal rankings.

“Looking at the scores, it’s obvious who is performing and it’s not John. Yet he was cleared, and Dion George was axed,” an insider explained.

Public Perception and Party Image

The DA has traditionally kept its internal disputes behind closed doors, but this controversy has played out in public, undermining the party’s image of integrity. Social media has been awash with criticism, questioning how the party could investigate itself rather than appoint an independent body.

Political commentators warn that the timing could have significant implications for the April leadership conference, as factional tensions threaten to overshadow campaign messaging.

“The DA’s squeaky-clean image is unraveling. This isn’t just a spat over money it’s about control and trust within the party,” said political analyst Professor Lesiba Teffo.

Ahead of the Leadership Conference

As the DA gears up for its leadership vote in April, the party faces a delicate balancing act. Will it present a united front, or will internal grievances over credit card misuse, ministerial dismissals, and alleged cover-ups continue to simmer publicly?

One thing is clear: the controversy has exposed the DA to scrutiny not just from within, but from the public and how the party handles it could shape perceptions of its governance and ethical standards for years to come.
