A Tragic Day for South African Aviation

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) continues its intensive search for 61-year-old pilot Andrew Blackwood-Murray, who went missing after a ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft crashed into the sea off Durban on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 2pm, during the aircraft’s final display at an airshow linked to the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Global Summit 2025 at Virginia Airport.

SACAA spokesperson Sisa Majola confirmed that the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) was on the scene immediately, beginning their inquiry into the cause of the crash. Director of Civil Aviation Poppy Khoza emphasised that all efforts are focused on locating Blackwood-Murray. “Our thoughts are with the pilot, family and friends as rescue operations continue,” Khoza said.

Battery Beach Closed as Rescue Efforts Continue

In response to the crash, eThekwini Municipality closed Battery Beach to support ongoing search and rescue operations. Teams on the ground are combing the coastline and waters, facing challenging conditions in their mission to locate the experienced pilot.

Tributes Pour In

Social media has been flooded with tributes, as colleagues and friends remember Blackwood-Murray as a world-class pilot and gentleman.

John Walland wrote: “Andrew, your spirit will forever soar in the skies you loved.”

Others recalled his mentorship and warmth. Venessa Richardson shared, “Gonna miss you. Andrew was always willing to chat, no matter how busy he was. He will leave a gap in the airshow calendar.” Ryan Douwie added, “My heart bleeds, Andrew. I’m glad I shared a classroom with you during the Airways April intake.”

Legacy and Community Response

Blackwood-Murray’s disappearance has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s aviation community. Known for his dedication to mentoring young pilots, his absence is deeply felt not only by family and friends but by the broader airshow and professional aviation circles.

As the search continues, authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could aid the recovery mission. Meanwhile, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by aviation professionals performing live demonstrations, and the tight-knit nature of South Africa’s pilot community.
