“One Africa, One Future”: Malema Pushes for Continental Unity

At a gathering of Africa’s legal minds, Julius Malema delivered a bold vision for the continent’s future, calling for unity on a scale rarely spoken aloud.

Addressing delegates at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) annual general conference in Enugu on Sunday, Malema painted a picture of a continent without borders, with a single parliament, one military command, one president, and one currency, a Africa stronger than the United States economically and politically.

“The currency of Africa will be much stronger against the American currency,” Malema declared, insisting that Africa must speak with one voice and protect its resources from foreign exploitation.

Reclaiming Land and Resources

The fiery EFF leader stressed that African land and mineral wealth must remain in African hands. “We want the land of Africa to be returned to Africa because it belongs to the Africans,” he said. “We want the minerals of Africa to be returned to the Africans. We want to build industries here, process our minerals here. We’ve got the capacity.”

Malema linked unity to the broader goal of peace on the continent, calling for an end to intra-African conflict. “There should be no part of Africa where Africans are killing one another,” he said, urging solidarity against external forces seeking to exploit divisions for profit.

Challenging Global Powers

Malema did not shy away from criticism of the United States, specifically former President Donald Trump, whose opposition to Malema’s political activism has been well documented. “We don’t care what Trump thinks of us. He will never choose a policy position for Africans,” he said, adding that Africa must assert its sovereignty on the global stage.

“We are not just a small nation. We are a big nation. How can we be dark when we’ve got a diamond that is shining amongst us? We are a shining nation,” Malema said, using his trademark rhetoric to emphasize African pride and potential.

Reception and Reflection

Malema’s address sparked immediate reactions on social media, with supporters hailing his vision as a call to African pride and self-determination, while critics dismissed it as overly idealistic and politically provocative. Legal analysts at the NBA noted the historic nature of the speech, highlighting how rare it is for a political leader to present such a comprehensive, continent-wide agenda to a professional body of lawyers.

As Africa continues to navigate economic challenges, political instability, and global competition, Malema’s call for unity, though ambitious, raises critical questions about how far nations are willing to integrate governance, military, and economic systems for a shared future.
