‘Arrest the CEO’: Numsa Demands Criminal Charges After Five Mineworkers Die in Ekapa Mudslide

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is pushing for the arrest of the Ekapa Mine CEO following the deaths of five mineworkers who were trapped in a mudslide.

The five workers were trapped after a mudslide at the mine in Kimberley. A tense rescue operation lasted over a month.

Their bodies have now been retrieved. Officials will use DNA testing to identify the remains before releasing the names.

Numsa’s Demands

Numsa is calling for the CEO to be held criminally liablenot only for the deaths of the workers but also for failing to pay more than 1,200 workers.

At the same time, the union is heading to court to stop the liquidation of the mine.
