A year-long manhunt has led to the arrest of another suspect in one of the Eastern Cape’s most chilling kidnapping cases, where two victims were robbed of more than R1.5 million.

Early Morning Raid in Ngangelizwe

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, together with Public Order Police, swooped on a homestead in Ngangelizwe in the early hours of Monday. Acting on an intelligence-driven operation and armed with a search warrant, officers found the 42-year-old suspect in his room and arrested him on the spot.

“This arrest is part of ongoing investigations into the Engcobo kidnapping case of June 2024,” Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana confirmed.

The Engcobo Kidnapping

The case dates back to 6 June 2024, when armed men allegedly stormed a family home in Engcobo. The victims were threatened with firearms, forced into vehicles, and taken to an unknown location. A ransom demand soon followed.

While the victims were held captive, the suspects reportedly drained their bank accounts using stolen cards and PIN numbers. Police say the money was siphoned off in stages, with some of it spent on high-end clothing at retail stores. By the time the ordeal ended, the victims had lost more than R1.5 million.

The victims were eventually released after days in captivity, with investigators crediting relentless pressure on the kidnappers for securing their freedom.

Fifth Suspect Arrested

The newly arrested man is the fifth suspect linked to the case. Others already in custody include Ntsika Tyali (38), Fundile Tyali (38), Mpumelelo Nyosi (41), and Akhona Unathi Deyi (51). They were picked up between 2024 and earlier this year.

The latest suspect is expected to appear before the Engcobo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 2 September.

A Wider Trend

Kidnappings for ransom have become a growing concern across South Africa in recent years, with police linking several cases to organised crime networks. The Hawks have made multiple high-profile arrests, but communities remain anxious about their safety.

This latest arrest is being seen as another step in tightening the net around a dangerous gang that terrorised victims for financial gain.
