Video: JMPD launches manhunt after Lenasia officer disarmed

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has launched a manhunt after an on-duty officer was disarmed of a service weapon during an incident in Lenasia on Thursday, 3 September.

The officer was performing official duties in the area when multiple male suspects accosted him, according to a JMPD media statement. The suspects took the officer’s firearm and fled in a getaway vehicle towards Golden Highway.

JMPD said no severe physical injuries had been reported at this stage. Medical and wellness support has also been activated for the officer.

Police seek information to recover weapon

Dedicated units are investigating the incident with law enforcement partners as the search for the suspects continues.

JMPD said the department ‘strongly condemns any attack on law enforcement personnel’, describing such incidents as a direct threat to community safety.

The department has appealed to residents who may have witnessed the incident or have information about the suspects or vehicle to come forward.
