Joburg Faces 8-Hour Power Cuts Next Week, Here’s When and Where to Expect Them

Johannesburg residents are bracing for another week of power interruptions, but this time, it’s not loadshedding. City Power has announced a series of planned and emergency maintenance outages across key parts of the metro from Monday, 10 November to Wednesday, 12 November 2025.

The utility says the interruptions are part of its ongoing effort to upgrade ageing infrastructure and “improve long-term reliability” of electricity supply across the city. Still, for many Joburgers juggling work-from-home schedules, small businesses, and evening routines, the timing couldn’t be more disruptive.

Monday: Midrand and Roodepoort Go Dark

The week kicks off with two separate 8-hour cuts on Monday, 10 November.

In Midrand (Region A), emergency maintenance will take place at the Rabie Ridge Switching Station from 9am to 5pm. The affected area includes Aasveol Street and surrounding zones.

Over in the west of Johannesburg, parts of Roodepoort will experience a planned interruption from 8am to 4pm as crews work at the Roodepoort Substation.
Areas expected to be affected include:

  • Roodepoort CBD

  • Davidsonville

  • Goudrand

  • Matholesville

Residents are advised to unplug sensitive appliances and plan around the outage period, as power may be restored earlier than expected without notice.

Tuesday: Inner City Feels the Pinch

On Tuesday, 11 November, the city centre won’t be spared either. A maintenance shutdown at the Karzene Substation will cut electricity from 8am to 4pm, affecting businesses and households in and around:

  • Khayelitsha

  • Betty Street

  • Durban Street West

  • Durban Street

For shop owners and downtown workers, the outage means generators, candles, and backup batteries will again take centre stage, a familiar scene in Joburg’s CBD.

Wednesday: Braamfontein Joins the List

The final day of scheduled maintenance will hit Braamfontein on Wednesday, 12 November, with the outage running from 8am to 4pm.

Affected areas include:

  • Wits University

  • Station Street

  • Jorissen Street

The area, known for its student energy and bustling cafes, will likely experience slower business as power cuts disrupt Wi-Fi and digital payments.

City Power’s Apology and Safety Reminder

City Power has apologised for the inconvenience, urging residents to remain cautious.

“The supply may be restored at any time,” the utility said. “Always treat your electricity supply points as live.”

The company added that these works are part of a citywide maintenance drive aimed at reducing unplanned outages and improving response times to faults, a move it hopes will win back public trust after years of frustration over power reliability.

Residents React

On social media, Joburgers met the announcement with mixed feelings. Some welcomed the proactive maintenance, calling it “better than surprise blackouts,” while others expressed fatigue at yet another week of disruptions.

One Twitter user quipped, “At this point, I schedule my life around power cuts more than work meetings.”

A Familiar Frustration

While City Power’s maintenance isn’t the same as Eskom’s loadshedding, it adds to a wider sense of instability for residents who have endured months of inconsistent electricity. Still, experts say that regular maintenance though inconvenient, is crucial to preventing transformer failures and prolonged blackouts down the line.

For now, Joburgers can only charge up, plan ahead, and hope the lights return on schedule.
