Johannesburg Braces for Eight-Hour Power Outages Across Multiple Areas Next Week

Extended outages as City Power undertakes maintenance

Johannesburg residents are being asked to prepare for significant electricity interruptions next week, as City Power carries out essential maintenance across six substations and switching stations. The planned work will see up to eight-hour outages affecting multiple regions, including Randburg, Midrand, Rabie Ridge, and inner city areas.

City Power emphasized that the work is part of its ongoing efforts to improve the reliability of the electricity network. “This maintenance is necessary to ensure our network continues to provide a better service to our customers,” the utility said.

Thursday hits Randburg

On Thursday, 21 August 2025, residents in Bromhof and Boskruin will face a full day of power cuts from 9am to 5pm as maintenance takes place at the Randburg Substation. Social media users have already begun sharing memes and warnings about planning their workdays around the outage.

Tuesday, 26 August – Midrand

• Halfway House Switching Substation: Richards Drive, part of Suttie Road

• Grand Central Substation: Part of Richards Drive, Suttie Road, James Crescent

Both outages: 9am – 5pm

Wednesday, 27 August – Rabie Ridge

• Poodle Place

• Terrier Place

• Dane Avenue

• Keeshond

• Dalmatia

Outage window: 9am – 5pm

Thursday, 28 August – Randburg

• Bromhof

• Boskruin

Outage window: 9am – 5pm

Inner city residents not spared

Inner city areas face two separate outages. On Saturday, 23 August 2025, Van Beek Substation maintenance will disrupt power in Jeppestown from 10am to 6pm, affecting Hanau, Jules Street, and surrounding areas. Another outage will occur on Tuesday, 26 August 2025, at Cydna Substation, impacting MSC Great Martindale, MVC 180, 1st Street, 20th Avenue, and Riviera Road from 8am to 4pm.

Safety first

City Power has urged residents to exercise caution during the outages. “As the supply may be restored at any time, customers are urged to always treat their electricity supply points as live,” the utility warned.

The scheduled maintenance, though inconvenient, is part of a broader programme aimed at improving service reliability across the city’s electricity network. City Power acknowledged the disruption, stating: “We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate the public’s understanding as we strive to provide a better service.”

Residents are advised to plan ahead, charge essential devices, and prepare backup solutions for the affected periods. With maintenance spanning six days across four regions, City Power aims to strengthen infrastructure and reduce unplanned outages in the months ahead.
