From freezing mornings to frustrating power cuts, Johannesburg is in for a difficult week. City Power has confirmed a string of scheduled outages across multiple regions from Tuesday, 10 June to Sunday, 15 June right as the winter chill begins to bite. With electricity interruptions expected to last up to eight hours per day, residents are urged to plan ahead.

These blackouts aren’t part of Eskom’s infamous load shedding schedule. Instead, they are the result of planned maintenance work at substations and switching stations that serve large parts of the metro.

Tuesday Blues: Outages Hit Regions F and G

The week kicks off with double trouble for customers in Region F and Region G, who’ll be the first to feel the pinch on Tuesday, 10 June.

In Region F, Fort Substation work will plunge parts of Braamfontein and Joburg Central into darkness from 9am to 5pm, affecting:

  • Wanderers Street

  • Hospital ‘N’ Street

  • Wolmarans Street

  • Smit Street

  • Sutherland Avenue

Meanwhile, over in Region G, Lunar Substation maintenance will disrupt supply from 8am to 4pm in:

  • Finetown

  • Grassmere Tollgate

  • Lenasia South Ext. 4

  • Migson Manor

  • Univalle

For small businesses and schools in these areas, the outages could mean a long day without lights, Wi-Fi or heating.

Midweek Mayhem: Noordwyk Extension Affected on Wednesday

On Wednesday, 11 June, the lights will go out in Region A. The Noordwyk Extension 43 area—including the busy Shell Filling Station and surrounding streets will lose power from 9am to 5pm. Affected roads include:

  • Protea Street

  • Alwyn

  • Deoder Avenue

  • Parts of 8th Road

  • Westbrook

This maintenance affects a growing Midrand suburb where many residents rely on remote work. Expect coffee shops and shopping centres nearby to see an uptick in business as locals seek refuge.

Weekend Blackout: Ethor Johnson Scheduled for Sunday

Rounding off the week, Sunday, 15 June, will see an outage at the Ethor Johnson Switching Station in Region A, running from 9am to 5pm. While Sundays are quieter, this interruption could still affect churches, weekend businesses, and meal prep for the week ahead.

Why This Is Happening: Behind the Outages

City Power insists the maintenance is crucial for long-term service stability. As ageing infrastructure becomes increasingly strained, especially during high-demand winter months, upgrades are needed to prevent unscheduled breakdowns.

“The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network, which is part of our program of constantly striving to provide a better service,” the utility stated.

But that’s cold comfort for residents already juggling Eskom’s erratic load shedding, higher winter electricity usage, and an economy under pressure.

Stay Safe: Power May Return Early

In a public safety advisory, City Power has reminded residents that electricity can be restored at any time during the outage window.

“Always treat your electricity supply points as live,” the company warned, urging households and businesses to switch off appliances and avoid tampering with electrical infrastructure.

Social Media Reactions: Joburg Residents Vent

Online, residents weren’t holding back.

  • @Mo_Rams tweeted, “8 hours in winter? Without warning? City Power owes us wool socks and candles.”

  • @MamaT_fromSoweto added, “How are we supposed to work from home with these long cuts? It’s like we’re back in 2008.”

  • On Facebook, community groups were flooded with questions like: “Why do they always do this in winter?” and “Any idea if our suburb is next?”

Others took a more practical approach, sharing generator tips and café recommendations with charging stations.

What’s Missing: A Bigger Conversation About the Grid

These disruptions raise larger questions about the state of Johannesburg’s power grid. While City Power is doing much-needed preventative work, residents feel caught in the middle—facing poor communication, inconsistent services, and a lack of meaningful compensation when outages disrupt their lives.

As more people turn to solar, gas, or generators, City Power risks losing paying customers unless service quality drastically improves.

If your suburb is affected, charge your devices, prep your meals, and bundle up. And if not—count yourself lucky. Joburg’s winter just got a little darker.
