A Knysna man is recovering in hospital after a terrifying para-kiting accident at Buffalo Bay Main Beach left him with serious injuries earlier this week.

Rescue Teams Race Against The Tide

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), rescue crews were dispatched just after 3:30 pm when reports came through of an injured kitesurfer on the beach. NSRI Knysna Station Commander Jerome Simonis said two rescue boats, Eileen Meadway and JAYTEE IV, were launched as a high tide began to roll in.

Emergency services from Western Cape Government Health, SANParks rangers, and an off-duty ER24 paramedic also responded to the call.

“Rescue swimmers located the man near the high-water mark,” said Simonis. “Our medics and paramedics immediately began treatment while SANParks rangers assisted.”

A Difficult Rescue On A Rising Tide

Because of the tide and limited access to the beach, emergency vehicles couldn’t reach the scene. Crews had to carry the injured man by stretcher across the sand to the parking area, where an ambulance was waiting to transport him to hospital.

The NSRI confirmed the man was in a serious but stable condition upon handover to paramedics.

Community Rallies Behind The Victim

Locals in Knysna and along the Garden Route have shared messages of support online, wishing the injured man a speedy recovery. Many have praised the quick work of the NSRI and emergency responders, who once again demonstrated their commitment under challenging conditions.

“All thoughts and care are with the man and his family while he recovers,” Simonis said, thanking the teams who assisted.

NSRI Issues Safety Reminder For Beachgoers

With summer around the corner and more people taking to the water for kiting, surfing, and boating, the NSRI is urging adventure seekers to stay alert to changing tides and winds.

Buffalo Bay, known for its beauty and unpredictable surf, can become hazardous when strong gusts or spring tides occur conditions that can turn a thrilling sport into a life-threatening situation in seconds.

“Always check weather forecasts and never go out alone,” Simonis reminded. “Preparation saves lives.”
