Limpopo police arrest 30-year-old suspect linked to rape of 95-year-old woman
A 30-year-old man has been arrested following the alleged rape of a 95-year-old woman in Vleeisboom village, within the Hlogotlou policing area in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune District.
The South African Police Service confirmed that the incident allegedly occurred on Friday night, January 9, 2026, at around 10 pm.
Police said the elderly woman was at her home preparing food when she was allegedly confronted by a man inside her house.
What police allege happened
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the suspect was reportedly armed with a knife when he entered the house.
Police allege that the man assaulted the victim, gagged her, and raped her before fleeing the scene.
A case of rape was immediately opened at the Hlogotlou Police Station, prompting an urgent investigation into the incident.
Arrest made within a day
Police said officers moved quickly to trace the suspect following the report. Through investigative work, the 30-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night, less than 24 hours after the alleged attack.
Acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, strongly condemned the alleged crime and praised investigators for their swift response.
He said the arrest demonstrated the police’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence, particularly crimes involving elderly and vulnerable victims.
Case proceeds through the courts
The suspect is expected to appear before the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 12, 2026, on a charge of rape.
Police confirmed that investigations are continuing as the matter moves through the criminal justice system.
