MK Party Stands Firm: Duduzile Zuma Sambudla’s Resignation Is “Not an Admission of Guilt”

A political storm, family divisions, and a growing international scandal, here’s what we know.

The resignation of Duduzile Zuma Sambudla, daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, has sent fresh shockwaves through South Africa’s political landscape, but the MK Party insists the move is not a confession or an attempt to run from accountability.

At a media briefing in Durban on Friday, party representatives made one thing clear: Dudu didn’t jump ship because she was cornered, she stepped aside to focus on the crisis involving South Africans trapped in the Russia-Ukraine war.

A Resignation Amid Allegations That Won’t Go Away

News broke this week that Zuma Sambudla had been linked to the suspected trafficking of South Africans allegedly recruited to fight in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

According to The Mercury, at least 17 South Africans, many of them from KwaZulu-Natal, are stuck in the conflict zone and desperately trying to come home. Their families, some speaking publicly for the first time, have been begging the government to intervene.

The backdrop is deeply emotional. One KZN mother told reporters she no longer sleeps at night, waiting for a call that her son is alive. Stories like these are driving national outrage and intensifying scrutiny on anyone accused of playing a role.

MK Party: “She Wasn’t Pushed. She Chose This.”

MK Party leaders, including Nathi Nhleko and Magasela Mzobe, stressed that Zuma Sambudla resigned voluntarily after discussions with leadership.

According to Mzobe:

“Comrade Dudu was never forced to resign.
She volunteered so she can focus on helping families return their loved ones.
This has nothing to do with guilt or wrongdoing.”

The party framed her move as an act of discipline and leadership not a retreat from the allegations.

They also said she plans to fully cooperate with state bodies investigating the matter.

Family Against Family: The Hawks Investigation

In a dramatic twist reminiscent of a political soap opera, the case was actually opened by Zuma Sambudla’s own sister, Nkosazana Bonganini Zuma Mncube.

Mncube alleges that her sister had a role in the recruitment of South Africans who ended up in the conflict. She told the media that some of those stranded are members of their extended family adding a layer of deeply personal conflict to an already complex case.

Hawks investigators are now digging into the allegations. Two additional names have surfaced:

  • Siphokazi Xuma

  • Blessing Khoza

These individuals are allegedly connected to the recruitment network.

But Zuma Sambudla has pushed back. In her affidavit, she said she was not a recruiter and was, in fact, a victim pointing to Khoza as the person behind the operation.

DA Steps In With New Claims

As if the political temperature wasn’t already high, the DA added fuel to the fire on Thursday.
The party claims to have new evidence, including around 100 WhatsApp messages from a group reportedly administered by Zuma Sambudla.

DA spokesperson Chris Hattingh says this material further links her to the alleged trafficking network.

Political analysts say this move by the DA is strategic a chance to score points against the MK Party and to pull activist voters into their corner ahead of municipal elections.

Public Reaction: Suspicion, Sympathy, and Social Media Fire

South Africans are sharply divided.

On social media, comments fall into three major camps:

  1. The sceptics
Those who believe the resignation is an attempt to dodge accountability.
“If there’s smoke, there’s fire,” one user wrote on X.

  2. The loyalists
MK Party supporters defending her as the target of political attacks by rival parties and the media.
“Dudu is being hunted because she’s a Zuma,” another posted.

  3. The worried public
Focused not on politics, but on the 17 South Africans stuck in a war.
“Can we please bring our people home first?” one mother responded online.

A Crisis Bigger Than One Politician

What makes this story resonate so deeply is not just the involvement of a high-profile political family it’s the human cost.

The Russia-Ukraine war may seem far from South Africa, but families in KwaMashu, Umlazi, and Newcastle are living a nightmare because their sons left seeking opportunity and ended up in a conflict they barely understood.

Zuma Sambudla stepping down won’t solve the crisis, but it may signal mounting pressure on political leaders to take action.

Duduzile Zuma Sambudla’s resignation has opened new political wounds, deepened family conflict, and intensified national debate about accountability and foreign recruitment.

Whether she is a villain, a victim, or a convenient political target will be decided in time, likely by investigators, not headlines.

But one thing is clear:
South Africa is watching closely, and the story is far from over.
