R5,000 python sale leads to arrests after intelligence‑led police operation in Delareyville

Two people were arrested and a live Southern African python recovered in Delareyville after an intelligence‑led operation targeting an alleged online wildlife sale, police said.

Operation traced online advert to Delareyville

Police said the operation followed information about a person who allegedly advertised a live Southern African python for sale on a private social media platform for R5,000. Following verification and sharing of the information, the alleged seller was traced to Delareyville.

Agencies involved and arrests

The intelligence‑led operation involved the Sannieshof Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit (STESU), the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), and the Wildlife Crime Information Network (WCIN). Two suspects were found in Delareyville; police said one of the suspects was carrying a blue bag. Both were arrested.

Charges and court appearance

The pair were arrested for allegedly possessing a protected wild animal without the required permits and for conducting a restricted activity without the necessary authorisation, allegedly contravening Section 57(1) of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act. They appeared briefly before the Delareyville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, were released on warning, and the matter remains before the court.

Police message to the public

“Members of the community are encouraged to report suspicious activities involving the illegal possession, transportation or sale of protected wildlife to the police,”

This message was delivered by North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams, who said the SAPS in the province continued working with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to combat wildlife crime.

Investigation status

Police confirmed the live Southern African python was recovered during the operation. Further details about the investigation were not provided.
