Residents renew calls for action over non-functional traffic lights and overgrown grass along R25/P91

Concerns from the ward councillor

City of Ekurhuleni Ward 91 Clr Desmond McKenzie told reporters that despite numerous complaints and repeated correspondence sent to Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela and Gauteng MEC for Environment Ewan Botha, there has been little indication of urgent intervention.

“The R25/P91 is an important provincial corridor connecting Kempton Park to Johannesburg and serving thousands of daily road users. Yet, most of the traffic lights along the corridor remain non-functional, creating unnecessary congestion and posing a significant risk to motorists and pedestrians alike.”

McKenzie said that poor grass maintenance along the corridor has compounded the problem by obstructing visibility at intersections and creating safety hazards, and that communities have a right to expect public-safety concerns to be acknowledged and addressed.

Calls for specific action

McKenzie called on the two Gauteng MECs to:

• Restore the non-functional traffic lights along the R25/P91 corridor
• Implement a regular grass-cutting and maintenance programme along the corridor
• Provide residents with clear timeframes and regular progress updates

He emphasised that residents are not asking for special treatment but for safe roads, properly maintained public infrastructure, transparent communication and a government that responds with urgency.

Response from provincial authorities

According to The Citizen (Kempton Express), Kempton Express approached the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport for comment, but no response had been received by the time of publication.

McKenzie said the safety of residents and the commuters who use the provincial corridor daily cannot continue to be compromised and urged the Gauteng Provincial Government to show commitment to public safety through decisive action, accountability and meaningful engagement with communities.
