Road closed after fatal taxi collision with tipper truck on Andrew Mapheto Drive
A 26-year-old taxi driver has died and five passengers were critically injured after a minibus taxi collided with a tipper truck on Andrew Mapheto Drive towards Thembisa on the evening of 7 June 2026.
What happened
The collision occurred on Sunday evening, 7 June 2026, at about 20:20 on Andrew Mapheto Drive towards Thembisa. Preliminary reports stated the minibus taxi was transporting passengers from Alexandra to Thembisa when it collided with a tipper truck.
Emergency response and casualties
Emergency services used the Jaws of Life to free the taxi driver, who was trapped in the wreckage. Paramedics certified the 26-year-old taxi driver deceased at the scene.
Five passengers sustained critical injuries and were transported to Thembisa Tertiary Hospital for treatment. The driver of the tipper truck was reported to have sustained no injuries.
Road closure and investigation
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) closed Andrew Mapheto Drive towards Thembisa during the early hours following the crash while investigators worked the scene. EMPD media liaison officer Thabiso Makgato said:
“Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and expect delays. As the scene is still active.”
A case of culpable homicide will be registered at the relevant South African Police Service station for further investigation to determine the cause of the accident. EMPD has urged all road users to exercise caution, obey traffic laws and remain patient while emergency services work on the scene.
Practical impact
Authorities advised motorists to seek alternate routes and expect delays while the investigation continues and the scene remains active.
