Sixth Day of Hearings Brings Fresh Scrutiny

As the Madlanga Commission enters its sixth day, a key legal expert from the South African Police Service (SAPS) is set to testify on Thursday, providing critical insight into the ministry’s governance framework amid serious corruption allegations.

The expert will be the third witness to take the stand, following explosive testimony from KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and National Police Commissioner Gen. Fannie Masemola.

Disbandment of KZN Task Team Sparks Outrage

Central to Thursday’s proceedings is Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s controversial decision to disband the KZN Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), a move that has triggered national debate and speculation over political interference in sensitive investigations.

The commission will scrutinize the legislative and operational authority of the police minister, with the SAPS legal expert expected to clarify the limits of ministerial power and the implications for accountability.

Deputy Commissioner Sibiya and Alleged Corruption

Thursday’s session will also revisit the suspension of Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, whose alleged role in shielding criminal networks has made headlines.

Gen. Masemola previously testified that Sibiya unlawfully tried to transfer 121 politically sensitive case dockets from the KZN PKTT to Pretoria, raising concerns that the move was intended to protect criminal syndicates operating in Gauteng.

Masemola further revealed that President Cyril Ramaphosa was aware of the disbandment, though no intervention followed. However, Masemola said Mchunu claimed the president had agreed to dissolve the task team, a version that contradicts the President’s purported reaction, leaving observers questioning political accountability.

Public and Political Fallout

Social media has been abuzz as South Africans react to the revelations, with calls for greater transparency in the upper echelons of SAPS and demands that the commission uncover the truth behind alleged cartel protection.

Political analysts warn that the hearings could reshape public perception of policing and governance in South Africa, particularly as concerns about political interference in law enforcement come to the fore.

Commission Continues to Probe Systemic Failures

Chaired by retired Justice Madlanga, the inquiry is examining allegations of systemic corruption, political meddling, and the protection of criminal networks within SAPS.

The SAPS legal expert’s testimony is expected to shed light on how the police service is meant to operate under the law, providing context for controversial decisions and helping the commission determine where accountability lies.

Another significant witness is scheduled for Friday, signaling that the commission’s investigation is entering a critical phase in uncovering one of the most high-profile policing scandals in recent South African history.
