For millions of South Africans, the start of each month comes with one pressing question: when will the grant money land?
Now, the South African Social Security Agency has officially answered that, releasing its full payment schedule for the 2026/2027 financial year. The calendar, approved by the National Treasury in March, outlines exactly when Older Persons, Disability and Children’s grants will be paid out each month.
And while the dates may look routine on paper, they carry real weight in households where every rand counts.
Why The Dates Matter More Than Ever
In communities across South Africa, social grants are more than just support. They are often the main source of income.
From covering groceries to transport and school essentials, the timing of payments can shape how families plan their entire month. That is why SASSA spaces payments across three days, aiming to reduce overcrowding at pay points and ease pressure on the system.
The agency says its approach is simple in principle: pay as early in the month as possible, while avoiding weekends, Mondays, public holidays and the first day of the month.
How The Monthly Payment System Works
Most months follow a predictable pattern:
- Older Persons grants are paid first
- Disability grants follow
- Children’s grants come last
This staggered system helps manage queues at retailers, ATMs and collection points, especially in busy urban areas and rural towns where access can be limited.
If a payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it shifts to the next working day.

Grant Increases Coming In April
The payment dates arrive alongside some financial relief.
During the 2026 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed increases to several grants from April:
- Old age, disability and care dependency grants increase by R80 to R2,400
- War veterans grant rises to R2,420
- Foster care grant increases to R1,290 in April and R1,300 in October
- Child support and grant-in-aid rise by R20 to R580
- Social Relief of Distress remains in place for 2026/2027
While modest, these increases come at a time when many households are grappling with rising food, transport and energy costs.
What To Do If Your Grant Is Late
SASSA has urged beneficiaries to seek help if payments do not reflect on the expected date. The agency recommends visiting the nearest office for assistance rather than assuming delays will resolve on their own.
It is also worth noting that once the money is paid, it remains available in your account. There is no need to withdraw it immediately, which helps reduce long queues and safety risks.
A System Millions Depend On
South Africa’s social grant system remains one of the largest on the continent, supporting more than 18 million people.
That makes every update to payment dates more than just admin. It is a timeline that shapes daily life, from when food is bought to when bills are paid.
For many households, knowing exactly when that next payment is coming offers something just as important as the money itself: a bit of certainty in uncertain times.
