Sassa reassures South Africans: Social grant payments will continue despite Postbank dispute
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has moved to calm concerns over grant payments, confirming that millions of beneficiaries will continue receiving their money despite uncertainty around its agreement with Postbank.
Agency urges calm
With the Master Service Agreement (MSA) between the two entities due to expire on 30 September 2025, rumours had begun circulating that payments might be disrupted. Sassa CEO Themba Matlou dismissed these fears, saying the agency’s responsibility to ensure seamless payments has not changed.
“Beneficiaries must remain calm. No eligible beneficiary will lose their grant regardless of changes with our partners,” Matlou said. “It is business as usual.”
Who is affected?
About two million South Africans receive their monthly social grants through Postbank. According to Matlou, these payments remain secure and uninterrupted. He added that beneficiaries also have the right to choose any bank for their grant payments under the Social Assistance Act.
Postbank responds
Postbank, for its part, clarified that the service agreement with Sassa does not end with the current date and that routine reviews are part of the process. The bank stressed that the continuation of social grant payments is not dependent on the presence or absence of the MSA.
Why it matters
South Africa’s social grant system supports over 18 million people each month, making it a lifeline for vulnerable households. Even small disruptions trigger national concern, especially after past payment delays and technical glitches raised fears about reliability.
By addressing the issue early, Sassa hopes to reassure beneficiaries that payments will remain stable despite behind-the-scenes negotiations.
