Second escaped Mpumalanga lion darted and captured in Barberton Valley

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has confirmed it darted and captured a second escaped lion in the Barberton Valley. The agency said the capture took place on Monday after a search conducted in difficult terrain.

Search challenged by terrain

MTPA described the search area as having dense vegetation and steep valleys, which made locating the animal challenging. The operation used a combination of aerial surveillance and drone technology to find and track the lion.

Partners and expertise involved

The MTPA said it received support from Wildlife Africa and other partners for veterinary expertise and logistical assistance during the capture operation.

Relief for local community

For the community, the agency said the capture marks the end of a nearly two-week nightmare. The MTPA’s senior communications manager, Simphiwe Shungube, said the outcome reflects the agency’s commitment to prioritising public safety while promoting responsible wildlife management and conservation.

The capture of this lion follows the earlier darting and capture of a first escaped lion at Uitkyk Road on the outskirts of the City of Mbombela on 24 May 2026.
