Senior SAPS officer surrenders, then told to return Tuesday

The dramatic case of a senior Crime Intelligence officer wanted on extortion charges took another twist on Monday when Colonel Ismail Dawood handed himself over to police, only to be told to come back the next day.

Dawood, who leads an elite anti-kidnapping task team, arrived at the Sandton police station shortly after 8am on Monday, accompanied by his legal team, as reported by eNCA.

He was redirected to the Hillbrow police station, where the case against him was originally registered. However, upon his arrival, he was informed to return on Tuesday due to confusion surrounding his warrant of arrest.

News24 reported that the confusion has raised questions about the coordination between police units handling the high-profile case.

The development follows a warrant issued for Dawood’s arrest on Friday, after he failed to honour an earlier agreement to surrender. Police had raided his Sandhurst home when he did not appear as arrange.

The senior officer faces charges of extortion, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and intimidation. The case reportedly involves a disputed R3.5 million debt, with the extortion charge centred on an amount exceeding R350,000 .

His lawyers say the matter is unrelated to his duties in the SAPS.

Speaking to eNCA on Monday, Dawood said he was surprised by his looming arrest, adding that the case is a family dispute.

He has consistently denied all allegations. His legal team maintains he is not a fugitive and has always intended to cooperate with the investigation.

The warrant for Dawood’s arrest was issued amid explosive testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which has been investigating allegations of criminality, corruption, and political interference within the country’s criminal justice system.

Dawood was previously implicated in testimony before the commission.

Dawood is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, where he intends to apply for bail, according to his legal team.
