Suspect killed after botched robbery sparks gun battle in Tshwane

A suspected robbery plot in Tshwane ended in gunfire, panic and one fatality after police intercepted a vehicle believed to be linked to a planned business heist.

According to police, one suspect was killed, another was wounded and placed under guard, while a third man managed to flee on foot during the dramatic confrontation on Thursday, 23 April 2026.

The incident unfolded during an intelligence-led operation involving the South African Police Service’s Tshwane District Stabilisation Task Team, working alongside private security teams.

Police say suspects opened fire first

Authorities said officers had received information about suspects allegedly preparing to commit a business robbery. Police then tracked the vehicle from Pretoria before attempting to stop it in Midrand.

Instead of pulling over, the suspects allegedly sped away and opened fire.

That led to a chase which ended in Klipfontein View, Rabie Ridge, where a shootout followed.

When the gunfire stopped, one suspect had been fatally wounded. Another was injured and taken for treatment under police guard. The third suspect disappeared into the area and is still being sought.

Weapons recovered inside vehicle

Police said two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found inside the suspects’ vehicle. Officers also discovered that the serial numbers on the guns had been filed off a common sign weapons may have been used in criminal activity or traded illegally.

Cases of attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition have been opened.

Investigators are now working to determine whether the group is linked to other armed robberies in Gauteng.
