A routine police tip-off in Musina has led to the arrest of a 27-year-old Zimbabwean woman found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with its serial number filed off, hidden in a bedroom pillow.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo acted on information received last Thursday evening about a suspect linked to an attempted murder case. Officers proceeded to a residence in Nancefield, where they found the woman alone on the premises.

According to Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, a search of the house uncovered a 9mm pistol concealed inside a pillow, along with live ammunition and a magazine. “The woman failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the firearm and ammunition,” Mashaba stated.

The Shadows of a Broader Case

While the arrest is for possession of an unlicensed firearm, the police operation was initially sparked by information connecting the suspect to a separate and violent attempted murder case. In that incident, which occurred earlier, a woman was repeatedly stabbed by a suspect at her workplace after being lured to the scene.

Police have not explicitly confirmed if the two cases are directly linked, but the connection is under investigation. The discovery of a weapon with a filed-off serial numbera hallmark of firearms used in criminal activities to avoid tracingadds a layer of gravity to the arrest.

Awaiting Court Appearance

The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court today, facing formal charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police investigations are ongoing as they work to establish the full origins of the weapon and any potential links to other crimes.

This arrest highlights the ongoing challenges of illegal firearms in border regions like Musina, a key transit point between South Africa and Zimbabwe. The seizure of a weapon removed from the official tracing system represents a small but significant victory for local police operations aimed at curbing armed violence.
