Amajimbos Make History At The U17 World Cup

South Africa’s Amajimbos have written their names into the history books, advancing to the knockout stages of the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup despite a 3-1 loss to Italy. The young national side secured their spot after a tense finish to Group A, where Bolivia and Qatar’s goalless draw ensured South Africa’s progression.

It’s a proud moment for coach Vela Khumalo’s side, who have shown grit and growth in a tournament filled with challenges and high-level competition.

A Tough Start Against A Ruthless Italy

Italy, known for their defensive discipline and technical flair, showed their quality early on. Just four minutes in, Valerio Maccaroni set up Borussia Dortmund’s rising star Samuele Inacio, who calmly finished to give the Italians the lead. It was Inacio’s third consecutive goal of the tournament, adding to an impressive tally that already had scouts talking.

Despite being under pressure, Amajimbos refused to crumble. They held firm, regrouped, and found their breakthrough in the 32nd minute when Shaun Els converted a clever free-kick routine, becoming the first player to breach Italy’s previously impenetrable defence at the tournament.

A Brave Fight In The Second Half

After the break, Italy turned to their bench in search of fresh legs a move that paid off. Antonio Arena restored the lead with a composed finish ten minutes into the second half, before turning provider minutes later to assist Inacio’s second goal of the match.

While the scoreline favoured the Italians, Amajimbos’ resilience was on full display. From Emile Witbooi’s relentless energy in midfield to the defensive discipline shown under pressure, Khumalo’s side fought until the final whistle.

Qualification Secured, Pride Restored

When news broke that Bolivia and Qatar had played to a 0-0 draw, celebrations erupted in the South African camp. Despite finishing the group stage with a defeat, Amajimbos’ four points were enough to clinch second place and a historic ticket to the knockout rounds.

Social media buzzed with pride and excitement as fans and former players applauded the team’s achievement. “What a moment for South African youth football,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). “These boys are proving that the future of Bafana Bafana is bright.”

For a nation that has long craved consistency in youth football, this moment feels like a turning point. The Amajimbos have not only advanced they’ve shown that South African football can compete, fight, and inspire on the world stage.
