Kyalami Gets Green Light To Chase Formula 1 Grand Prix Return In 2027

For South African motorsport fans, the dream of hearing the roar of Formula 1 engines in Midrand is edging closer to reality. Cabinet has officially given the nod for Kyalami to launch a bid to host the Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2027.

Government Approval And Private Funding

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni confirmed that Cabinet had approved the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s request to pursue the bid. The plan is for Kyalami to host the race over three consecutive years, and crucially, the project will be backed entirely by private-sector funding rather than taxpayer money.

Kyalami’s Grade 1 Upgrade

Earlier this year, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) accepted the final design proposals needed to bring Kyalami up to FIA Grade 1 status. This certification is the highest possible for a racing circuit and a non-negotiable requirement for hosting Formula 1. For many South Africans, the news felt like a signal that the country was finally back on the grid after decades away from the sport.

Kyalami has a special place in South Africa’s sporting history.
