The fourth round of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship is already carrying playoff-like pressure for South Africa’s heavy hitters. Just a few weeks into the new season, the Bulls and Sharks last year’s top two local finishers are under the microscope.

Bulls Look to Bounce Back in Galway

After a humbling loss to Ulster, the Vodacom Bulls head to the west of Ireland for a tricky clash against Connacht on Friday night. Head coach Johan Ackermann has swung the selection axe, making 11 changes to his side in search of a spark.

Galway has traditionally been a graveyard for visiting teams, but the Bulls’ depth could prove decisive. If they win, it’ll mark their third victory in four games a solid recovery that would erase memories of last week’s defeat. A loss, however, could see their hopes of another top-two finish begin to wobble.

Connacht, now under former England mentor Stuart Lancaster, are equally desperate to kickstart a new era, making this a test of both character and consistency.

Sharks Under Pressure, But Reinforcements Return

Down in Durban, the Hollywoodbets Sharks find themselves in early trouble with just two points from three games. But reinforcements have arrived Eben Etzebeth, Ox Nche, Siya Kolisi, Grant Williams, and André Esterhuizen all return to the starting lineup.

Head coach John Plumtree has been clear: there are no excuses this week. Facing a confident Ulster side that dismantled the Bulls, the Sharks will rely on their returning Springboks to steady the ship.

While it’s still early days in the marathon that is the URC, the Sharks’ faithful know that a home loss could set off alarm bells. As Plumtree put it, this team is built to win and now, it’s time to prove it.

Lions Desperate for First Win at Ellis Park

The Emirates Lions have endured a miserable start to their campaign, sitting near the bottom of the log with just a single losing bonus point. But back at altitude, and with a 1:45pm kickoff against a struggling Scarlets side, the odds are finally in their favour.

Scarlets, thrashed 34-0 by the Stormers last week, will find the thin Johannesburg air unforgiving. Expect the Lions to come out firing in front of their home fans and possibly restore some pride after weeks of defensive lapses.

Stormers Aim to Keep the Momentum

No team has made a better start than the DHL Stormers, who top the table after three rounds. They travel to Parma on Saturday to face Zebre, a side showing steady improvement but still far from South Africa’s powerhouse.

For the Stormers, the challenge is maintaining their rhythm on tour. Young star Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and playmaker Damian Willemse are expected to feature again both have fond memories of lighting up Italy in past seasons.

With another bonus-point win on the cards, the Stormers could tighten their grip on top spot before returning home.

Elsewhere in the URC: Irish Fireworks and Tight Contests

The pick of the international fixtures sees Leinster host Munster in Dublin, a clash that rarely disappoints. Leinster are under pressure to perform after a shaky start, while Munster sit just behind the Stormers on the log. Expect a fiery Irish derby.

Friday night’s Edinburgh vs Benetton matchup promises to be close, while the Ospreys vs Glasgow Warriors and Dragons vs Cardiff fixtures could both deliver upsets.

The Stakes Are Rising

It may be early in the URC season, but the tension feels real. Every South African side has something to prove this weekend whether it’s restoring pride, regaining confidence, or sustaining momentum.

And as the Bulls battle the Galway winds, the Sharks face a defining home clash, and the Stormers look to stay perfect abroad, one thing’s for certain: Round 4 is where the tone of South Africa’s URC story could be set for the season ahead.
