Swan Lake Returns to Jozi: Ballet Grandeur on Mandela Stage

A historic joint production hits Joburg
Swan Lake is coming home and in style. From 4 to 13 July 2025, Johannesburg plays host to a rare cultural collaboration between Joburg Ballet and Cape Town City Ballet, who unite to present ten performances of this iconic ballet at the Mandela Theatre.
It’s the first time in almost 30 years that South Africa’s two leading classical ballet companies are sharing the same stage. And they’re doing it with a production scale and cast rotation seldom seen in the country.

A cast that brings Swan Lake vividly to life
The lead roles of Odette/Odile and Prince Siegfried will be danced by a rotating lineup of celebrated performers. From Joburg Ballet, audiences can look forward to seeing Monike Cristina, Bruno Miranda, Tammy Higgins, Revil Yon, Ryoko Yagyu, and Ivan Domiciano.
They will alternate with Cape Town City Ballet‘s Kirstel Paterson, Leusson Muniz, Hannah Ward, Jerome Barnes, Sasha Barnes, and Isabella Redman. The mysterious and malevolent Von Rothbart will be portrayed by Gabriel Fernandes, David Maluleka, and Axton Green.
Each performance will feature a different pairing, offering ballet lovers something unique with every show.
Music, choreography, and cultural depth
Tchaikovsky’s breathtaking score will be performed live by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra for all evening performances, conducted by Eddie Clayton. For midweek matinees, a recorded orchestral version will be used.
The production is a reimagining of the classic staging by Attilio Labis, first performed in Cape Town in 1971. This 2025 version has been restaged by acclaimed South African choreographer Veronica Paeper, adding a fresh vision while preserving its traditional grandeur.
Why this isn’t just another ballet
This is more than a performance; it’s a cultural moment. With over 60 dancers on stage, this staging of Swan Lake speaks to the power of collaboration across cities and companies. It’s a rare and important reminder of the richness of South Africa’s classical arts scene.
The story of love, betrayal, transformation, and triumph has captivated audiences for nearly 150 years, and this 2025 revival adds new layers to the legend.
