Scandinavian Airlines Expands Virgin Atlantic Codeshare To South Africa

Travellers flying between Scandinavia and South Africa now have more ways to reach the continent’s southern tip. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has expanded its codeshare partnership with Virgin Atlantic to include Johannesburg and Cape Town, strengthening travel links between northern Europe and southern Africa.

Seamless Connections Through London Heathrow

Under the expanded agreement, SAS will place its SK flight code on selected Virgin Atlantic routes from London Heathrow to Johannesburg and Cape Town. The arrangement, already active, allows passengers to book through SAS while connecting effortlessly onto Virgin-operated flights via Heathrow.

The two airlines already cooperate on routes to destinations such as Dubai and the Maldives, but this latest development adds two of Africa’s busiest gateways to their shared network.

Boost For Business And Leisure Travellers

According to SAS Chief Commercial Officer Paul Verhagen, the new partnership aims to make long-haul travel smoother for Scandinavian passengers:

“This expanded codeshare with Virgin Atlantic strengthens SAS’ offering to business and leisure travellers by opening up more options to popular destinations. By placing our code on Virgin Atlantic flights, we make it easier for our customers to connect seamlessly through London Heathrow and enjoy a smooth travel experience.”

With this move, SAS travellers from Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm will be able to access South Africa’s key cities with one booking and coordinated schedules, simplifying what has traditionally been a multi-leg journey.

Strengthening Nordic–African Travel Links

For South Africa, the addition signals growing global interest in the country’s tourism and business connectivity. While SAS does not operate direct services to Africa, partnerships like this codeshare offer Scandinavian travellers more convenient routes and bolster inbound tourism from northern Europe.

As global aviation continues to recover, such collaborations are helping airlines extend their reach without adding new aircraft or routesoffering passengers greater choice and a smoother flying experience.
